TORONTO -- A 37-year-old guard is fighting for his life after stepping out of an armoured car and into a hail of gunfire during a botched heist in an upscale part of the city early Thursday.

The GardaWorld employee, who along with his partner escaped a similar robbery attempt unscathed two weeks ago, hopped out of the truck to make a cash delivery at a TD bank around 1:10 a.m. and was immediately ambushed by three bandits, Toronto Police alleged.

"The guard returned fire to protect himself," Staff-Insp. Mike Earl said Thursday. "But he was struck several times."

The guard was wearing body armour, which may have prevented further injuries, but he was hit in his chest, arm and knee, Earl said.
