MIAMI - At least 10 people were shot, two of them fatally, outside an apartment building in Miami early on Tuesday morning, police said.

Gunfire erupted in a courtyard-like area outside the building in the low-income neighbourhood of Liberty City at about 2:30 a.m. EDT, according to Miami Police Department spokeswoman Frederica Burden.

Two people died, one at the scene and another after being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, which also received four other victims with various injuries, Burden said.

Fire officials said they had taken at least six people to the hospital, although other victims may have been transported by family members or friends, Burden said.

Jackson Memorial Hospital officials would not release information about the victims.

The circumstances and details of the shooting were unclear, and the number of injured was still fluctuating, Burden said.

"(Two) people dead after group of 7 to 10 people were shot," local television station WSVN-TV wrote on Twitter citing the Miami Police Department. The other victims' injuries ranged in severity from minor to critical.

The Miami Herald newspaper said 10 people were hit in gunfire at the intersection of northwest 12th Avenue and 65th Street.
