CALGARY -- On his deathbed, the city's latest homicide victim was able to supply police with information on the crime, an investigator said Wednesday.

The death of the Calgary man four days after being stabbed has a 16-year-old facing a second-degree murder charge.

But before he died Tuesday in hospital, Gabriel Okeynan, 45, was able to help their investigation, Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said.

"The victim was able to provide us with a verbal statement," he said.

And police are interviewing a second male youth and are trying to identify others who they believe might have been involved in the group assault late Friday night outside Marlborough Mall.

Just before midnight Friday, a passerby discovered a critically injured Okeynan, who was stabbed just minutes before, Chisholm said.

"We believe he was attacked by at least two individuals ... we can confirm he was stabbed at least once," he said.

Soon after police arrived, they arrested a 16-year-old male suspect a few blocks from the scene.
