TORONTO — A 31-year-old school teacher is dead and two other people are fighting for their lives after they were sprayed by bullets in front of a lowrise apartment building in Toronto early Tuesday.

Police say the gunfire erupted around 12:15 a.m. Officers arrived moments later to find two men and one woman shot.

"The call actually came in from two officers who were patrolling in the area and heard several loud bangs," Const. Victor Kwong said.

He said the three victims were rushed to hospital with various injuries.

Abshir Hassan, 31, later died.

He was a teacher at a nearby public school.

The other two victims — a man, 22, and a woman, 18 — remain in hospital in serious condition.

"This is obviously a horrendous event that has taken place," Insp. Tim Crone said.

"This was a very brazen, cowardly act in a community that has made great strides in the past few years to bring a sense of calm and safety to the area," he said. "It's very, very disturbing."

It's believed a group of people were hanging out on the porch at the west end of the lowrise enjoying a warm summer's night when a gunman walked up and opened fire.

The shooter fled the area immediately. No arrests have been made.

Area residents who heard the gunshots recalled rushing outside to see two men and one woman covered in blood.

One of the men was face down on the ground.

"I heard his mom screaming, 'My only son,'" said one woman, who lives in the building next door and wouldn't give her name.

She said the shooting scene is something she will never forget.
