TORONTO — The murder of a 31-year-old Toronto school teacher has shocked his devastated friends and former students.

"He was an extremely awesome gentlemen. He was so awesome," Renee Tellis said of her friend, Abshir Hassan.

Hassan died and two other victims were wounded after they were sprayed by bullets in front of a lowrise apartment building in Toronto early Tuesday.

Police say the gunfire erupted around 12:15 a.m. Officers arrived moments later to find two men and one woman shot.

"The call actually came in from two officers who were patrolling in the area and heard several loud bangs," Const. Victor Kwong said.

He said the three victims were rushed to hospital with various injuries.

Hassan later died.

He was a teacher at a nearby public school.

The other two victims — a man, 22, and a woman, 18 — remain in hospital in serious condition.

"This is obviously a horrendous event that has taken place," Insp. Tim Crone said.
