QUEBEC CITY — A father and son from the Quebec City region told a judge that post-traumatic stress was to blame for their chainsaw and steak knife attack on a bailiff in 2012.

Nicolas Giroux and his father Marc made the claim this week during a sentencing hearing.

The bailiff visited the defendants' home on Dec. 21, 2012, to serve the younger man with Army discharge documents, the court heard.

When the victim returned to his car to fill out some papers, he says he saw the father, Marc Giroux, come at him with a chainsaw while his son Nicolas brandished a steak knife.

"Nicolas Giroux hit the victim three or four times, injuring his hands," said the Crown. "The father, meanwhile, was revving the chainsaw and moving it up and down."

The men have pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in October.
