A Winnipeg man accused of beating and raping his girlfriend told court it was her idea he tie her up and denied putting a noose around her neck.

The 28-year-old man claimed his girlfriend had been watching an adult movie that featured a man tying a woman up with a bed sheet.

“She asked me to tie (her hands behind her back),” he testified. “She said to get a sheet.”

Both the alleged victim and the accused immigrated to Canada from the same African country several years ago but met for the first time in Winnipeg.

The 22-year-old alleged victim previously testified she had just returned from work to their Furby Street apartment on Feb. 11, 2013, and was talking with a friend on the phone when the accused started beating her with a broom.

Later, after the beating ended, the man went to bed. When the woman remained in the living room, he demanded she join him. Once in the bedroom, he demanded she have sex with him, she said.
