Man who shot at robbers busted for drugs

SUDBURY, Ont. – A man and woman who tried to rob a local man were chased and shot at by their intended victim.

Police said a man, 45, and a woman, 36, went to a Donovan Street residence at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday "with the intention of robbing the occupant."

Once inside, the man pulled a knife on the 63-year-old man who lives in the apartment, but the fiesty resident wasn’t going along with the plan.

He grabbed a .22-calibre rifle and chased the knife-wielding man to a vehicle driven by the woman and shot at them as they made good their get-away.

Neighbours saw the the man open fire on the fleeing pair and called police.

About eight hours later the failed robbers were arrested at a traffic stop.

The man is charged with robbery with weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of probation. The woman is charged with robbery with a weapon.

Police later executed a search warrant at the victim’s apartment and found .22-calibre rifle ammunition, 46 hydromorphone tablets valued at $370 and five grams of marijuana worth $50.

He was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance, in addition to weapons offences for opening fire on the fleeing couple.
