CALGARY — Two suspected thieves found themselves up the Bow River without a paddle Tuesday.
Police didn't take long to track down the unwitting pair after a canoe was reported stolen from a Calgary home at about 5 p.m.
A neighbour spotted the thieves dragging the canoe down to the water before they managed to launch it.
But they forget to grab the paddles, said homeowner Ron Parent, meaning their getaway was more drift than swift.
"It sounds like they weren't playing with a full deck," he said.
"It sounds like they were maybe picking berries on our property and saw the canoe stored away."
Police launched Marine 1 and caught up to the stolen canoe, but not before the pair of suspected thieves managed to partially submerge it.
Police were able to salvage the canoe, and return it to Parent.
"We're quite happy to have it back," he said.
"There's a few scratches on it that weren't there before but it seems all intact.
