TORONTO — An Oshawa, Ont., man is facing charges after dozens of pets — including a raccoon and tarantula — were allegedly abandoned at his home for up to five days, police said Friday.

Police were called to the home around 5 p.m. last Saturday by neighbours who expressed concern about a dog who had been left outside.

"Area residents had been feeding the dog for a few days and heard other dogs barking inside the home," Durham Regional Police Staff Sgt. Bob Elliott said.

"Officers entered the residence and were immediately overcome by the strong, foul smell of animal excrement," Elliott said.

Two dogs were found in "distress," police said, and numerous other pets were unattended.

An iguana, a caiman, two bearded dragons, nine red-eared sliders, five snakes, 10 turtles, a frog, a tarantula, and a raccoon were also seized from the home.

"The dogs and raccoon were loose, but the remaining animals were in cages or aquariums. There was no available source of food, and very little brown-coloured water in a bowl," Elliott said.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was contacted and has assigned an investigator to the case.
