TORONTO - Witnesses may be “terrified” to come forward after a fatal stabbing outside a Toronto Community Housing building early Saturday, residents say.

Toronto Police Det.-Sgt. Mike Carbone says the man was stabbed multiple times outside of 540 The West Mall, near Rathburn Dr., around 3 a.m. When police and ambulance arrived, he was dead.

“They found the lifeless body of an individual,” Carbone said, adding he could not offer specifics about the man. “They attempted to revive him but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries.”

Carbone said it’s not yet clear what provoked the attack that occurred in a playground adjacent to the housing complex. Investigators interviewed a number of witnesses and reviewed security footage from the area, he said.
