A man grabbed a blue parakeet named Sky and stuffed it into a black shopping bag before fleeing a B.C. pet store, Mounties say.

Police said the Caucasian man, between the ages of 35 and 40, entered the store Sunday and snatched the male Indian Ringneck parakeet, worth $700.

Cpl. Stephanie Ashton said the exotic bird is described by pet store staff as "sweet and friendly," but it won't survive if released or if it escapes.

Sky is 18 to 20 inches long including a lengthy tail, is powder-blue in colour and has a red beak.

The suspect is 5-foot-10, heavy build with dark hair and glasses. The man was wearing a blue and white striped dress shirt, jean shorts and black sandals.

Anyone with information about the alleged birdnapping is asked to call police.
