WINNIPEG -- A former exotic dancer who clocked another stripper on the head with a high-heel shoe as she was performing on stage has been spared jail and granted a two-year suspended sentence.

Sabrina Schmaltz, 32, previously pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon.

"Being a dancer is something I never (aspired) to do ... and unfortunately I went into a world that I really didn't belong in," Schmaltz told court Wednesday. "Unfortunately, in that world a lot of girls don't get along and I did let them get under my skin."

The bar where the June 28, 2012, assault occurred was not identified in court.

Schmaltz was trying to get out of the stripper world and this was a source of resentment among her fellow dancers, including the victim, defence lawyer Aaron Seib told court at a sentencing hearing earlier this spring.

"I suppose they looked at it as, 'Oh, you think you are better than us because you are moving on’," Seib said. "They made Ms. Schmaltz's life extremely difficult. It amounts to workplace bullying... On this particular occasion it reached a boiling point and she snapped."
