TORONTO - A Toronto man was viciously attacked after accidentally bumping into two men near Yonge-Dundas Square while walking and looking down at his phone.

Toronto Police say the victim, 33, fought off his assailants but then, in an unguarded moment, a knife was plunged into his heart and now he’s fighting for his life.

One suspect is in custody but the man believed to be responsible for the stabbing remains on the loose.

“It’s something we’ve all done, whether it be texting or looking down at your watch while walking and accidentally bumping into someone,” Det. Jason Shankaran, of 52 Division, said Wednesday. “It was a pretty innocuous incident.

“But in this case the response was blown way out of proportion.”

Shankaran, who pieced together the attack by talking to witnesses and reviewing surveillance video, said the victim was walking north on Yonge St., above Dundas St., with a coffee in one hand and his cellphone in the other when he “inadvertently bumped shoulders” with one of the two men around 12:30 a.m.

Both men suddenly became “overly agitated,” he said.

“They turned around, fists raised, ready to fight and started throwing punches and kicks,” Shankaran said. “I think they thought they were going to get away with being bullies, but they ran into someone who was able to defend himself.”

It took the victim less than a minute to “repel” his attackers, but that apparently didn’t sit well with them.

“The victim apparently thought it was all over with, so he let his guard down and was about to go his own way when one of the men pulled out what appears to be a knife,” Shankaran said. “He ran at the victim and stabbed him once in the chest, piercing his heart.”

The victim collapsed and as the life drained out of him a bystander called 911.
