WHITECOURT, Alta. -- A 41-year-old mother of 11 faces child abandonment and neglect charges after a child was left in a hot vehicle in town Saturday afternoon.

As temperatures approached 33 C outside, police and EMS were called to the parking lot in front of the local IGA around 2 p.m. responding to report of a child locked in an unplated minivan.

Emergency crews arrived just as the rest of the family returned to the vehicle.

The child, who was flushed red, lethargic and covered in sweat when removed from the minivan by EMS workers, was rushed to hospital in Whitecourt, about 175 km northwest of Edmonton.

Reports from the scene suggest that the family was visiting from the United States.

The mother was taken into custody and charged with child abandonment and causing a child to need intervention under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.

She is due to appear in court on Oct. 14.

The condition of the child is unknown.
