Two men have been charged after a young mother was stabbed to death at a Halifax party in 2011.

On Jan. 8, 2011, Keya Knita Simon, 19, was killed and her 32-year-old sister was injured at a party in the city's north end.

Police initially had questioned a person of interest, but he was not among the two charged.

Demarqus Shane Beals, 25, has been charged with second-degree murder. Carondo Shondez Downey, 25, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

"We are hopeful that these charges will allow the healing to begin for Keya's family and friends," the police said in a release.

Days after her death, Simon's friend, Tera Lynn, told QMI Agency the 19-year-old had a baby boy at home.

"Words can't describe how she took to being a mother. She loved her son. He was the most important thing in life," Lynn said.
