A man who murdered two Edmonton men in killings a judge said involved "gratuitous violence tinged with sadistic overtones" was handed two life sentences Friday. Melvin Simon Mitchell, 24, will not be eligible to apply for parole for at least 25 years after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the 2013 slayings of Jose Rodriguez, 68, and Curtis Dugray, 51. "You took the lives of two innocent individuals and these killings were marked by considerable brutality," said Court of Queen's Bench Justice Sterling Sanderman.
