CALGARY -- Police believe a young woman gunned down during a night out with her friends was an innocent bystander.

Just before 3 a.m., emergency crews responded to calls about a shooting and found a woman, believed to be in her mid-20s, dead at the scene.

Staff Sgt. Mike Cavilla said police believe the woman had left a bar and was standing with several friends outside when she was "inadvertently shot."

"We believe (she) was an innocent bystander," said Cavilla.

"It's very unusual and we're deeply concerned as a police service that some individuals were innocently having a conversation outside an establishment when one of them was shot and died as a result."
