A 41-year-old convict serving time for murder is on the lam after escaping from a British Columbia prison Sunday afternoon.

RCMP say Norman Gilbert Riel was seen getting into a white Suburban outside the prison to make his getaway.

Riel was serving a sentence for second-degree murder that happened in Vancouver in 1998. His criminal record also includes several robbery and firearms offences in Edmonton and Vancouver, police said.

He is described as Metis, 5-foot-8, 210 lbs., has brown eyes and long brown hair, which is possibly tied in a bun.

He has been known to travel in the U.S. to avoid arrest.

If anyone spots Riel, police say you should not approach him and instead call 911 immediately.
