OTTAWA — A woman's body pulled from the Rideau River Tuesday afternoon is being treated as a suspicious death, with the major crimes unit now taking over the investigation.

Police were alerted shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a witness reported a body floating in the Rideau River, lodged in a rocky ridge in the water, upstream from the rapids that flow through the Carleton University campus.

The police marine dive unit recovered the woman's body around 12:30 p.m. as a small group onlookers watched from the river bank.

Most at the scene were asking if the body was that of a student, with memories of Carleton student Nadia Kajouji's suicide in 2008 still raw. The 18-year-old Carleton student jumped into the fast-flowing waters at the same spot of the river.

Police did not release any information on the woman's identity Tuesday.
