MONTREAL -- Jail life has left Luka Rocco Magnotta overweight and unrecognizable.

Magnotta, who is accused of the gruesome murder of Chinese student Jun Lin, appeared in a Montreal courtroom on Thursday for a hearing in advance of his murder trial which is expected to start on September 8.

He wore a pink shirt, and is much heavier than when he was arrested in June, 2012.

The hearing was called because Lin's parents have called for a publication ban on certain details that they consider obscene. Judge Guy Cournoyer will decide what can and can't be made public at the trial.

Jury selection will begin on September 8, and is expected to take about a week. Fourteen jurors will be selected instead of 12, and all will have to be fully bilingual.

The crown is expected to begin presenting their case on September 22. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.

Last week, Bell Media cancelled its broadcast of a documentary on Magnotta because the film violates a publication ban.
