CALGARY -- A Saskatchewan man faces serious charges after he was allegedly found speeding down the highway drunk with six young kids in the back of his van.

RCMP say they tagged an eastbound van going at 149 km/h on Hwy. 1 near Suffield, about 7 p.m. Friday, and the situation quickly escalated. The hamlet is approximately 32 km northwest of Medicine Hat.

When they pulled the vehicle over, the 21-year-old driver was found to be impaired with children sitting in the back.

Officers took six kids ranging in age from eight months to nine years, one of which was unrestrained, and Child and Family Services have joined Mounties in their investigation.

"We're still investigating his relationship to all the children ... the driver is related to all the children," Cpl. Chris Zanidean said.

When the driver is released, it will be with a court date in Medicine Hat to face charges for impaired driving and criminal negligence.

"Anytime anyone's driving is impaired, they're not only putting their lives at risk, but everyone's else's lives at risk," Zanidean said, adding having children in back "just makes it that much more important."
