June 2010 the warmest on record

Last month was the warmest June ever recorded, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. What's more, it followed three months of record-shattering heat.

In its monthly global snapshot, NOAA said March, April, May and June were all the warmest they've ever been.

June's average temperature was 16.2 C, about 0.68 C hotter than the 20th century average for the month. The previous record was set in 2005.

In Canada, southern Ontario and Quebec felt the brunt of it, with heat, humidity and smog warnings plaguing the regions throughout mid-June. New Brunswick also experienced some record-shattering days.

According to NOAA, each of the 10 warmest average global temperatures recorded since 1880 have been in the past 15 years.

So far, 2010 is on its way to being the warmest year ever. It's already the warmest year through June, a record previously held by 2008.

If the heat continues to rise, 2010 will beat out 2005 for warmest year on record.

June was particularly scorching in Mexico, Northern Africa and most of Europe, Asia and South America.

But not everyone felt the heat. Scandinavia, southeastern China and the northwestern U.S. all experienced cooler than average temperatures.

The Chinese province of Guizhou had its coolest June on record.
