Crime on the decline

The police-reported crime rate in 2011 dropped 6% from 2012 - the eighth year in a row it has fallen. Since peaking in 1991, the crime rate is at its lowest point since 1972.

Police also reported about 2 million offences in 2011, almost 110,000 fewer than in 2010. The decline is mostly from drops in property offences, theft under $5,000, mischief, break-ins and motor vehicle thefts.
