'Miracle dog's' emotional reunion
By SHAWN LOGAN, SUN MEDIA
EDMONTON -- Medical staff at the Edmonton Humane Society welcomed back a familiar furry face yesterday, as a former patient they call a "miracle" made an emotional return. Humphry, a three-month old Havanese-cross found lying on the side of the road in north Edmonton on Sept. 23 after being clipped by a car, reunited with the veterinarian that nursed him back to health, showering them with puppy love. TWO SURGERIES Jessica Steinkey, one of the animal health technicians who along with three other vets performed two surgeries on Humphry to repair a fractured pelvis and severe internal injuries, was thrilled to see the miraculous mutt make his energetic return. "He's quite a bit of a miracle dog," she said. "We weren't quite sure we were even going to be able to help with him -- it's great to see he's found the right home for him." The furry fighter was brought in by a Good Samaritan who found the wounded puppy and delivered it to the humane society. The initial outlook was grim. But after only three weeks of treatment, Humphry was ready for adoption on Oct. 17 and it didn't take long for Salem Bryant of Edmonton to fall for the alluring animal just hours after he became available. "We both just saw this face and that was it -- it was just total love at first sight," she said. "Whoever lost this little guy, they lost out on a lot and we gained even more." 'SHOCKED' Bryant brought Humphry for the visit to thank staff for nursing the pup back to health and said she's amazed at how well he's rebounded. "When we were told the medical history we were honestly shocked," she said, noting Humphry routinely bounds up stairs but can't quite summit the couch on his own yet. "You'd never think that anything ever happened to him."
