WINNIPEG -- Sometimes we not only have to "do" unto others, but "undo" what someone else has done.
This is one of those times, and the focus of our compassion ... a beautiful little puppy named Marvin. This is his story, as told by the lady caring for "Starvin' Marvin" presently, Karina:
"Marvin was found in a back lane by a kind woman on Nov. 14. She rushed him to my vet's clinic (where I work). He was severely emaciated, dehydrated and could not even lift his head. He was given a tiny amount of food and was absolutely ravenous! So much so that he had to be muzzled for the rest of the day as he thought that anyone who was handling him was food and he tried to nibble at our fingers (and by nibble I mean eat them).
"Once we were able to get more water and a little more food into him he calmed down and the muzzle came off. After about four hours he began to be able to lift his head. By the end of the day he was standing.
"The next day he could hobble/walk. He is improving more each day, gaining almost two pounds in just three days of being given a proper diet and water. He is so caring and loving -- a true cuddlebug.
IMPROPER BONE GROWTH
"Because he was so malnourished for so long, his bones and even toenails were not able to grow properly. Many X-rays were taken of his shoulders, legs and hips. Both shoulders and wrists are dislocated due to improper bone growth.
"Marvin is approximately 10 months old (vet's opinion -- according to X-rays of his growth plates). He appears to have been starved his entire life. He is a husky mix, weighed 15 pounds when found, and should be closer to 44.
"Once recovered sufficiently he will need surgery to repair his limbs and hopefully to allow him to walk pain-free, so I am asking for donations to go toward his cause. The most direct way to help is to call McPhillips Animal Hospital (589-8381) and let them know you wish to make a donation via credit card. The account number is 7823591R. Further information on Marvin, including other ways to help, is available by visiting www.small-dog-rescue.webs.com.
"Donations received will go directly to the cost of his surgery. Any remaining, to our small animal rescue."
Now here's an update from Karina, as of last Friday:
"Marvin is doing much better, seems to be very happy now and really enjoys coming to work with me every day.
"Similar progress is being made with our fundraising. My goal is $3,000 and we have just hit the $1,000 mark, so we're getting there. Thanks Seven Oaks School Division for your fundraiser!
"It is just amazing to me how many people are helping. Thanks so much in advance for anything anyone is able to do, Karina."
Our donation is on the way Karina, but the people I'd really like to see "pay" are those responsible for Marvin's neglect. Unconscionable. Please help this little guy any way you can folks.
