She’s got a new home and a new name.
A blind beagle found wandering along a Whitby street on June 24 was adopted by a Bradford-area couple last week.
Initially named Celia, the pup now goes by the handle, Toffee, and lives in a home with two other beagles.
New owners, Angela and Ken Gougeon, wanted to bring Toffee home since they first read about her in the Toronto Sun.
The Humane Society of Durham Region was overwhelmed with adoption applications after the Sun ran the pup’s story last month.
“As soon as my husband brought the Sun home, I said, ‘Can we get her?’” Angela recalled Tuesday.
They weren’t alone. Pet owners from across Canada and the U.S. offered to give Toffee a home.
The Gougeons, who already own beagles, Mac and Tosh, won out and, after a successful introduction to their existing dogs, they got to bring their new pup home.
So far, Angela said Toffee is learning the layout of their house and having fun playing with her new canine companions.
“She’s adjusting really well,” Angela said.
While humane society investigators believe Toffee was dumped by an owner who couldn’t deal with her condition, so far, no tips have come in about the case.
“It’s a good thing we got her,” SPCA officer Debby Houghton told the Sun Monday.
The Gougeons can’t believe anyone would leave Toffee behind.
“I can’t believe someone would do that,” Angela said. “She’s awesome.”
