Stolen WWII compass finds its way home
By KATE DUBINSKI, QMI Agency
LONDON, Ont. - A Second World War aircraft compass stolen from a home in Norwich has been surreptitiously returned to its owner, police say. The Type P4 compass was stolen sometime on July 27 or 28 from a home on Stover St. S. It was kept in a grey wooden box with the words "Delicate Instrument to be Handled with Great Care" stencilled on the lid in red lettering. The compass belongs to the son of the original owner, a veteran. The man was working on a vehicle in his yard when he noticed the rear door was slightly ajar. "When he looked in the car he found it on the floor," OPP Const. Dennis Harwood said. Police don't know who brought the compass back, or when. "We think through the media attention the original theft garnered, the person knew it was hot," Harwood said. "The attention made it uncomfortable for the person." Officers believe someone knows who stole the compass, and are looking for anyone with information to step forward. They are asked to call Oxford County OPP at 519-688-5640 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. kate.dubinski@sunmedia.ca twitter.com/kateatlfpress
