Twelve years back, David Stewart found an abandoned baby in a New York subway station and responded the way most of us would.

He frantically called the person closest to him, his partner Peter Mercurio, and told him to get to the station as soon as possible.

Three months later, the couple were in family court that had taken custody of “Baby Ace,” as he was nicknamed, when the judge asked Stewart if he was interested in adopting the baby.

Without hesitating, Stewart said, "Yes."

The couple, who were legally married in 2011, shared their poignant story in the New York Times Friday.

In the essay titled We Found Our Son In The Subway, Mercurio says that Kevin, formerly known as Baby Ace, asked him if the judge who performed his adoption would marry his new parents.

Mercurio sent a query letter to the Manhattan family court and says that within hours, a court attorney called to say that the judge remembered the couple and was thrilled by the idea of officiating their marriage.

While exchanging their vows, Mercurio said he reflected on the circumstances that brought them to that courtroom.

"We weren’t supposed to be there, two men, with a son we had never dreamed of by our side, getting married by a woman who changed and enriched our lives more than she would ever know. But there we were, thanks to a fateful discovery and a judicious hunch."
