A single mom in Durham, N.C., received a heart-warming surprise from a stranger during a dinner out with her children.

During a night out at a local Pizza Hut, the woman, whose children suffer from behavioural issues, anticipated they would be loud and apologized in advance to a fellow diner who was seated at a nearby table, according to ABC.

She said that he told her, “No worries. I have three of my own and I can relate.”

After he left, a waitress came by to give her some good news – the stranger had paid for her family’s meal, left her a gift certificate and a note.

The letter commended the loving way in which she was parenting her children and encouraged her to continue doing so.

“I’ve had the worst few years of my life and I never get recognition like this. I just do what I can to get by,” the mother, who says she is a survivor of domestic violence, told ABC.

“I just can’t thank him enough for what he did for me and my family,” she said. “You never know who’s watching you and the greatest displays of integrity, and pure core of who you are, are when you don’t think someone’s watching you.”

Below is the transcription of the letter from ABC:

"I do not know your back story, but I have had the privilege of watching you parent your children for the past 30 minutes. I have to say thank you for parenting your children in such a loving manner.

I have watched you teach your children about the importance of respect, education, proper manners, communication, self control, and kindness all while being very patient. I will never cross your path again but am positive that you and your children have amazing futures.

Keep up the good work and when it starts to get tough do not forget that others may be watching and will need the encouragement of seeing a good family being raised. God bless! -Jake"
