A newspaper photograph of a homeless man identified only as Nick huddled for warmth around a steam grate in Washington, D.C., helped a New York woman find her missing brother.

Hannah Simmons of Rochester, N.Y., recognized her brother after the photo appeared in the local newspaper, Democrat and Chronicle, on Sunday.

She tweeted at the reporter who wrote the original article about freezing temperatures hitting the U.S. Midwest in USA Today. The reporter, Natalie DiBlasio, then tweeted at The Associated Press photographer Jacquelyn Martin.

Martin contacted the family and police were called to help.

Police said Nicholas Simmons, 20, was found Sunday and taken to hospital.

"Nick is alive and obviously not well," Michelle Simmons, Nick's mother, wrote on a now-deleted Facebook page, the Democrat and Chronicle reported. "I am beyond able to put into words how I am feeling."

DiBlasio later tweeted, "the power of social media is really incredible." Martin tweeted she was "so happy (for) the family."
