January Teichert has the blond hair, athletic body and dynamic looks of a confident Sunshine Girl.
The 28-year-old Ottawa firefighter also has a 6.5-inch scar -- her friends lovingly call it a war wound -- snaking down the centre of her abdomen, narrowly avoiding her belly button.
Teichert likes to say doctors did her a favour by saving her belly button during surgery to remove a basketball-sized cancerous tumour in early 2013.
“They had to make sure my incision was big enough to get the whole thing out,” said the Goderich-raised beauty.
Teichert first noticed bump that felt hard, and didn’t seem to be the result of weight gain, in September 2012. It wasn’t until after Christmas holidays that she saw specialist. By then, the lump had grown much larger than its original size of a grapefruit.
