EDMONTON — A lung transplant recipient is the city’s latest million-dollar Lotto 6-49 winner.

Russell and Sheila Brown are thankful for their good fortune — health, family and nearly 50 years of marriage. Now they can add lottery win to that list.

“To me, this is the second time we’ve won,” Sheila said. “If we hadn’t won the donor lottery the first time, we couldn’t have won this time,” she said.

Russell bought the $4 ticket at a Sobeys in Edmonton and went back after the draw and used the ticket checker.

“It didn’t display very quickly and I thought, ‘Oh no, I broke it,’” he said with a smile. “Then it said, ‘Appears to be a $1,000,000 winner.’ I walked away and thought to myself, ‘Calm down and use your head.’ So I got a pen and wrote my name on the ticket.”

Russell grabbed some groceries and came back to check the ticket one more time before leaving the store.

“I went home and told my wife, but she didn’t believe me,” he said.

The couple sees a special significance in winning the lottery at this point in their lives.
