PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — John Pirie’s 35-year-old weekly ritual paid off big time when he won Saturday’s $10.4-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot.
“On the way to work at 5 p.m. every Sunday night I stop at the gas station to check my tickets,” he said Monday in Toronto, where he picked up his prize. “I had five tickets. I was down to my last one and I scanned it in the self-checker.”
His first move?
“I was overwhelmed by the thought I would have to call my work and tell them, ‘I can’t make it in tonight.’”
The father of six and grandfather of seven from Peterborough, Ont., hasn’t decided what he’s going to do with the money.
