Ignatieff promotes Goodale to deputy leader
By ALTHIA RAJ, Parliamentary Bureau

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff named a permanent replacement in Ottawa Tuesday, as he plans to spend more time outside the capital courting potential votes.

Ignatieff appointed former finance minister and long-time Liberal House Leader MP Ralph Goodale to the post of Deputy Leader.

“I’m going to continue getting out there and meeting Canadians all through the fall in our ‘Open mike’ town hall meetings. That’s why I need Ralph’s steady hand in Ottawa,” Ignatieff said in a press release.

Ottawa MP David McGuinty, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s brother, was appointed the opposition’s new house leader and will face off against another Ottawa-area MP Conservative House Leader John Baird.

While McGuinty acknowledged both house leaders will be responsible for making Parliament work, he told QMI Agency that Baird will set the tone for the new relationship.

“A lot of the tone … is obviously set by the government,” he said. “If the government decides to continue with a really disturbing and anti-democratic approach to Canada’s Parliament, it will make it more difficult.”

Ignatieff’s large shuffle was also noteworthy for welcoming Quebec MP Denis Coderre back in the senior ranks.. Coderre quit last year as Quebec Lieutenant over a disagreement on candidates. He will now be the party’s natural resources critic.
