OTTAWA - MPs will debate an NDP anti-bullying motion in the Commons on Monday just days after the RCMP announced it would investigate the circumstances surrounding a B.C. teen's suicide.

Dany Morin, a 26-year old who serves as the NDP's deputy critic for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and transsexual issues, hopes all parties will support his bid to develop a national anti-bullying strategy.

Morin says he has had to address high profile teen suicides in the House too many times and it is now time for prevention.

"We need to act now," Morin said. "This is a nationwide problem."

Morin, who was also a victim of bullying, says technology is making matters worse for youth because social media makes victims vulnerable at all hours of the day.

"When I was a teenager, Facebook didn't exist," he said.

Morin says the federal government needs to work with a network of players including provincial governments, educators and parents to combat this "growing" issue.

The debate on Morin's motion happens to be scheduled just after the recent suicide of 15-year-old Amanda Todd. The B.C. teen's tale of torment prior to her suicide, documented on

YouTube, has gained international attention and media coverage.

The RCMP is now looking into the circumstances around Todd's death.

"We have in excess of 20 officers on it," said RCMP media spokesman Peter Thiessen. "This is extremely complex. It is an area of police work that is evolving and new."
