MPs defeat humanitarian drug exports bill

OTTAWA - Parliamentarians narrowly defeated private member's bill 148-141 Wednesday that was geared towards easing access to generic drugs for the world's poorest.

The bill failed to pass when a handful of Tory MPs who'd previously voted in favour of similar legislation that died on the order paper in 2011 voted against it this time.

The Conservatives say the bill's intention was laudable, but it wouldn't accomplish the goal of improving health in the neediest parts of the world.
