Toronto technology lawyer and author George Takach has joined the race to lead the federal Liberal party.

Takach, 55, is a Bay Street lawyer, a York University law professor and the son of Hungarian immigrants. He's never held political office, but doesn't see that as an impediment as he takes on high-profile politicians like MPs Justin Trudeau and Marc Garneau.

"While other politicians have spent their careers focusing on getting re-elected, George has spent his championing innovation and how it can fuel both economic growth and a better society," reads his campaign site.

"He has helped some of Canada's most innovative companies become more competitive and successful. He has helped inventors, researchers and investors bring new products to market that have literally changed the way we live,"

His campaign focuses on "embracing technological innovation, which our country can and must become better at in this hyper-competitive age, if we want to become one of tomorrow's economic leaders."
