Liberal leadership contender Marc Garneau wants more players in the telecommunications sector to give consumers more choice, access and cheaper services.

Canada's first astronaut in space wants to "open the door fully" to competition, but would still maintain restrictions in broadcast to protect Canadian content and culture, QMI Agency has learned.

The Montreal MP will elaborate further on his first policy plank Monday and roll out his entire economic blueprint in a speech at the Economic Club of Canada Toronto on Wednesday.

Telecommunications includes radio, television, telephone and Internet.

Garneau is among a half dozen hopefuls who have put money down to become the next leader of a party that was crushed in last year's election, winning 34 seats and becoming the third-place party in the Commons.

The leader will be chosen in April.

Polls show the Liberals are bleeding support from the NDP, which is seeing its core strength in Quebec evaporate with the rise in support for theseparatist Bloc Quebecois.
