OTTAWA - Immigration Minister Jason Kenney wants more immigrants who know how to swing a hammer than those versed in Greek mythology.

A program announced Monday will allow more people with skilled trades to become citizens to fill a growing labour shortage of workers, such as welders and pipefitters needed in the oilpatch, and other blue-collar jobs like electricians and mechanics.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program will launch Jan. 2 and will accept up to a maximum of 3,000 applications in its first year.
