EDMONTON — The province's chief electoral officer has appointed a retired judge and two investigators to look into allegations of an improper $430,000 donation to Premier Alison Redford's party from Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz.

The Wildrose Party called for an investigation after reports suggested the PCs accepted a single $430,000 donation, which would far exceed the $30,000 legal donation limit.

A single cheque amounting to a third of the war chest raised by the PCs "shows how rotten the PC party has become," Wildrose justice critic Shayne Saskiw said.

Wildrose called for a ban on corporate donations to political parties and capping personal donations at $5,000 annually, or $10,000 during election years.

“If there’s merit, we launch an investigation…if it’s a small matter, we investigate internally,” he said.
