OTTAWA — A day after saying he did nothing wrong, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty received a slap on the wrist from the federal ethics commissioner for a violation of conflict of interest rules.

Mary Dawson says it was "improper" for Flaherty to use his cabinet minister's title in a letter to Canada's broadcast regulator in support of a radio station application submitted by a company in his riding.

"I therefore order you to refrain from writing any similar letters in the future without seeking approval from my office," Dawson told Flaherty on Friday.

Flaherty says the letter was on his MP's letterhead, but it was an "oversight" to also include his ministerial title.
