It cost taxpayers more than $1 million to airlift the prime minister's armoured vehicles to India last November to securely ferry Stephen Harper around the country during an official tour.

The government tabled the costs related to shipping the motorcade overseas Tuesday in response to an order paper question by the NDP.

The total cost to operate and staff the C-17 transport aircraft came to $1,061,448.

Asked about the price tag during question period, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird pointed to India's history of political instability and terrorism threats - including the assassination of two of its prime ministers.
