OTTAWA - Canada pledged another $25 million in humanitarian aid to Syria on Wednesday.

At a fundraising conference in Kuwait, the United Nations called on international donors for $1.5 billion for the growing humanitarian crisis caused by the 22-month long civil war in the Mideast nation.

Speaking to reporters during a teleconference from Kuwait City, International Co-operation Minister Julian Fantino praised "the willingness of the greater international community to come together to co-operate and work towards promoting the rule of law, democracy, human rights" in Syria.

The funds bring Canada's total contribution to $48 million since January 2012.
