OTTAWA — A northern Ontario NDP MP wants Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau and MP Royal Galipeau to apologize for public remarks made about Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, which reportedly poked fun of her weight and protest.

Metroland Media reported Brazeau and Galipeau made a number of comments about Spence — who spent six weeks on a high-profile personal protest in Ottawa.

"I look at Miss Spence, when she started her hunger strike, and now ... she's fatter," Brazeau said at a provincial Tory fundraiser Wednesday, according to the article.

NDP MP Charlie Angus says an apology is in order.

"They make fun about her weight, and they get it for the laughs," Angus said. "I think it sends a message of contempt towards First Nation people and I think that they should apologize."

Last week, Spence's Twitter account was used to call Brazeau "a colonized Indian a--hole," but the comments were deleted shortly after.
