Feds failing aboriginal inmates: Watchdog
By Kristy Kirkup, Parliamentary Bureau

One in four federal inmates aboriginal: Report

OTTAWA — Federal Conservatives were not willing to commit Thursday to a slew of recommendations released by Canada's prison watchdog, who highlighted ballooning rates of aboriginal incarcerations and systemic failures inside federal penitentiaries.

Correctional investigator Howard Sapers released a scathing study Thursday that identifies the rate of aboriginals incarcerated in the last five years has ballooned 43%.

He also noted about 3,400 aboriginal men and women make up 23% of the Correctional Service of Canada's inmate population, while they only comprise about 4% of the overall Canadian population.
