WHITEHORSE, Yukon -- Gold was discovered here just over a century ago.
And Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in the first speech of his annual summer tour of the Far North Sunday, told a crowd of party faithful here that mining was the way forward, too.
"(As) it was all those years ago, the responsible development of resources is vital to Yukon's future just as it will be to Canada's future," Harper said.
His tour this year is largely focused on mining and natural resource development, and Monday is the Discovery Day holiday in Yukon to celebrate the first gold finds in 1896.
"The North is Canada's call to greatness. As Conservatives we believe this with a passion... And as Conservatives, we have pledged that northern development will mean northern prosperity," he said.
