A newly discovered giant asteroid could obliterate Earth in less than 20 years and a Russian politician thinks getting rid of it is a job for his country's astronauts.
Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's vice-premier, tweeted a link about the discovery of the asteroid, named 2013 TV135.
"That's a super target for national cosmonauts," he wrote Thursday.
The Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Ukraine discovered the asteroid Oct. 8.
It is about 400 metres wide and made a "close approach" to Earth on Sept. 16, when it came within 6.7 million km of destroying us.
It is set to take another swipe at Earth in 2032, although NASA says there's a 99.998% chance it will miss.
Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office, says people really don't need to be concerned about that .002% chance we're all going to die.
