CALGARY - When people have asked Calgarian Zac Trolley where he sees himself in the future, he has always had an answer.

Mars.

Now the 31-year-old electrical engineer is a step closer to boldly going where no man has gone before — becoming one of the first humans to live on the red planet.

Last month, Trolley learned he was among the 1,058 candidates who made it to the second round of selections from more than 200,000 applicants hoping to be part of a Mars colonizing mission.

Through a multi-billion project, not-for-profit foundation Mars One aims to establish a permanent human settlement on the planet, by sending up crews of four every two years starting in 2024.
