Two volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean have formed together.

The U.S. Space Agency says the islands, which lay 1,000 km south of Tokyo, merged together after eruptions on the seafloor spewed enough material to rise above the water line.

In November 2013, a new island sprouted near to Nishino-shima, another volcanic landmass that last expanded in the 1970s.
